Design , Optimization, Structural Mechanics ....

Một vài thí dụ:

OPTIMIZATION OF A FLYWHEEL:
The optimization of the hole sizes of a flywheel is completed with the objective of minimizing the mass of the wheel. The hole sizes are the design variables and there is a constraint on the peak stress. As the hole sizes change, the location of peak stress occurs at different points. The derivative-free method is used to solve this optimization problem.

CHEMICAL REACTORS:
A chemical solution is pumped through a catalytic reactor where a solute species reacts in contact with the catalyst surface. The model aims to maximize the total reaction rate of the solute for a given total pressure difference across the bed by finding an optimal catalyst distribution. Shown is the catalyst distribution (as the height), direction of flow (streamlines), and concentration distribution (color plot).

How to Model Magnetic Bearings in COMSOL Multiphysics
https://www.comsol.com/blogs/modeling-magnetic-bearings-in-comsol-multiphysics/
...
Passive Magnetic Bearings
Passive magnetic bearings use permanent magnets and do not require sensor and control circuitry or input power. The constant air gap is maintained by the magnetic repulsion force between the opposite poles of PMs, as demonstrated in a permanent magnet bearing, or by the electrodynamic suspension (EDS) between the PMs and the rotating conducting disc or shaft, as illustrated by an electrodynamic bearing. The geometry and simulation results for the passive magnetic bearing using PMs is shown below.

...
Radial Electrodynamic Bearing
A radial electrodynamic bearing consists of a conducting cylinder affixed to a rotating shaft. The components of the PMs are stacked in between the iron rings, such that the radially inward or outward magnetic flux — with reference to the shaft axis — is created in the air gap between the stator and rotor. The Electrodynamic Bearing tutorial, available in our Application Gallery, is solved using the Magnetic and Electric Fields interface. The magnetic forces are computed for various offset positions.

Left: The 3D geometry of a radial electrodynamic bearing. Right: Radial electrodynamic bearing depicting the magnetic flux density in the stator (iron and magnets) and the eddy currents (grayscale) in the conducting rotor for the x-axis offset position of 1.5 mm.

Axial Electrodynamic Bearing
The cross-sectional cut configuration for an axial electrodynamic bearing is shown below. The conducting disc is attached to the rotor and the magnetic material (iron yoke) is used to guide the magnetic fields of the PMs, such that the magnetic flux lines are parallel to the rotor axis. This is where the term axial electrodynamic bearing comes from.

In this design, the magnetic flux path is very effective with a relatively small air gap. The tutorial model is available to download from the Application Gallery.

Left: Cross-sectional cut of an axial electrodynamic bearing. Right: An axial electrodynamic bearing showing the magnetic flux density in the stator and the eddy currents in the conducting rotor. An arrow plot of the magnetic flux density in the stator and the eddy currents in the rotor are also shown.

Modeling and Simulation for Meeting the Challenges of Battery Design

Modeling and Simulation for Meeting the Challenges of Battery Design
The biggest challenges for battery design are energy density, power density, charging time, life, cost, and sustainability. Modeling and simulation are very efficient methods that can assist researchers, developers, and designers in meeting these challenges.

The following is an excerpt from Multiphysics Simulation 2017.
By Ed Fontes
Energy density is limited by the battery’s chemistry, which even without losses limits the theoretical energy density. The chemistry is defined by the electrode material and the composition of the electrolyte. Lithium-air batteries get close to the energy density of gasoline, which is probably close to the maximum energy density for a battery. However, the components required for thermal management and current collection contribute to the total weight of the battery system. The design of these components can substantially influence the energy density of a battery system.

Figure 1. Multiphysics simulation of the temperature profile in a liquid-cooled battery pack. Fluid flow and temperature are modeled in 3D and a lumped 1D model of the Li-ion battery is used to calculate the heat source.

POWER DENSITY AND FAST RECHARGE
The power density of a battery is important for the efficiency of electric vehicles. A high power density is required to recapture high amounts of energy in a short time during
regenerative braking or fast recharge. This gives a difficult optimization problem, since the system has to cope with very high current densities during recharge and relatively low current densities during discharge. It also relates to the design of the thermal management and the current collectors mentioned earlier. In addition, the design of fundamental battery components such as the electrodes, separator, and electrolyte are of great importance for power density.

LIFE, RELIABILITY, AND SAFETY
Life is a major consideration where safety and reliability are closely related. Discharge, wear, and failure should occur slowly and in a controlled and transparent way. This is not only an issue of the chemistry of the battery, but also of the design, since uneven current density distribution and poor control of discharge/recharge and of the thermal management system may accelerate wear and increase the risks of failure. Short-circuits formed by metal deposition may be responsible for decrease in performance as well as an increased risk for runaway heating. Technologies for state-of-health monitoring are required in order to continuously assess the state of the battery system and the risks of failure.

COSTS
The manufacturing process for high-power batteries and electric powertrains is not as optimized as for mechanical powertrains for combustion engines. There is a larger potential in productivity gains and decreased costs by large-scale production in the manufacturing process for the battery components.

SUSTAINABILITY
The development of new batteries has to include the aspect of sustainability. There has to be a strategy for mining, recycling, producing, and disposing of new battery types. This is primarily a legal matter for governments, but also a commercial consideration for battery manufacturers and automotive companies.

MODELING AND SIMULATION
The understanding and optimization of fundamental components of the battery; such as electrodes, electrolyte, and separator; can be accelerated using modeling and simulations. The systems for thermal management, current collection, and state-of-health monitoring can also be developed with high-fidelity multiphysics simulations.
Figure 1 shows a model for the optimization of the channels in the cooling plates of a battery pack. The is a common application in the automotive industry. For example, Fiat Research Center uses mathematical modeling for studying thermal management of pouch cells for hybrid vehicles1.

Figure 2. The goal with this application is to explain experimental electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and to show how you can use the model and the measurements to estimate the properties of lithium-ion batteries. The application takes experimental data from EIS measurements as input, simulates these measurements, and then runs a parameter estimation based on the experimental data.

Fundamental studies of battery components as well as the development of state of health methods can be very efficiently carried out by combining experimental measurements of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with mathematical models, see the article from the French research institute CEA2. Figure 2 shows an app, where experimental data can be imported and used in a physics-based model of EIS. This allows for the estimation of parameters such as activity of the electrodes, surface area, electrical conductivities of the different components, mass transport properties of reactants and products, and state of charge of the electrodes.

I absolutely agree with Jeff's review. For me this long expected book (advertized at COMSOL Conference) was nothing but disappointment. The author does not bother to explain anything. You are supposed just keep clicking without understanding what you are doing and why. One typical example. Page 221, Summary for 2D Hall effect model says: "Chapter 4 have introduced new concepts: ..., weak constraints,... " Curious about weak constraints? Look at page 176, where they were introduced: "Click the Weak Constr. tab. Verify that the Use weak constraints check box is checked". That's all you can get about weak constrains. Still curious? Look at Index: "Weak Constrains: pp. 176, 221". You cannot learn much from this book.

c) COMSOL for Engineers
Mehrzad Tabatabaian 2010, 254 Pages
https://b-ok.cc/book/2867351/5cbe7c?dsource=recommend

COMSOL Multiphysics software is one of the most valuable software modeling tools for engineers and scientists. This book is designed for engineers from the fields of mechanical, electrical, and civil disciplines, and introduces multiphysics modeling techniques and examples accompanied by practical applications using COMSOL 4.x. The book includes a companion CD-ROM with files of over 25 models, images, and code. The main objective is to introduce readers to use COMSOL as an engineering tool for modeling by solving examples that could become a guide for modeling similar or more complicated problems. The objective is to provide a collection of examples and modeling guidelines through which readers can build their own models. Readers are assumed to be familiar with the principles of numerical modeling and the finite element method (FEM). The book takes a flexible-level approach for presenting the materials along with using practical examples. The mathematical fundamentals, engineering principles, and design criteria are presented as integral parts of examples. At the end of each chapter are references that contain more in-depth physics, technical information, and data; these are referred to throughout the book and used in the examples. COMSOL for Engineers could be used to complement another text that provides background training in engineering computations and methods. Examples provided in this book should be considered as "lessons" for which background physics could be explained in more detail. FEATURES
